CORRECT APPRECIATION OF THE HISTORY OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

“Ignorance of the error to be eradicated oftentimes subjects you to its abuse.”(S&H 446:31)  This is a true and definite statement of fact.  The Christian Scientist who thinks he can attain the

kingdom of heaven without understanding the modus operandi of evil, for the time being, is doomed to disappointment.
Essential to this understanding also is the modus operandi of the unfoldment through which Christian Science has passed in its establishment and presentation to the world.  There are  those  who  think  that  this  unfoldment  and the understanding  of  it  are  not at  all  necessary to  their  growth  and  grasp  of  Christian Science. In this  they  are mistaken,  for some  understanding of the history of Christian Science,  as presented  to human  belief,  is  as  necessary  as is some   understanding   of   the  history  of   music or   of   mathematics   to  a   correct   appreciation  of either.

This is particularly necessary in obtaining a clear sense of the many and wonderful ways Mrs. Eddy was guided and directed by divine Mind to found the institution of Christian Science.
In due time all of Mrs. Eddy’s actions in the establishment of Christian Science  will be carefully  gathered  together  and given to  the world and will show  how  every  step was the elimination of human beliefs for spiritual oneness.

The Boston Case introduced a letter written Sept. 30, 1918, by the Board of Trustees to the Board of Directors, which has been perhaps rightly called a second Declaration of Independence.  You would not today be enjoying the freedom of thought that you are, if the truth  of that letter had not been the animating motive of Mrs. Eddy’s Deed of Trust of 1898, constituting the trusteeship,  and  finally  bringing  to  light  the  utter futility and uselessness of so-called organization in relation to the understanding and demonstration of  Christian  Science.  “Every step of progress is a step more spiritual.   The great element of reform is not born of human wisdom; it draws not its life from human organizations; rather is it the crumbling away of material elements   from reason, the translation of law back to its original language,-Mind, and the final unity between God and man.” (Peo. 1:1.)
